Al-Mg-Si Alloys for Laser Powder Bed Fusion
The points in the diagram show compositions with a melting interval smaller than 70 degrees (marked in the left hand bar). The right hand color bar illustrates the amount of Mg2Si. To the left the precipitate can be selectd.
Light red points are expected to show alloy compositions that would be printed without cracks.
This agrees well with findings of a recent paper of Wen et al. illustrated by the blue crosses.
A tool for selecting alloy compositions in the Al-Mg-Si system for additive manufacturing by laser powder bed fusion.
To obtain crack-free material the melting interval should be minimized. This will lower the risk for hot tearing. Alloy compositions with a defined melting interval can easily be picked out. Simultaneously, the amount of precipitated Si / Mg2Si can be viewed to select alloy compositions with a potential precipitation strengthening.
